Expertise: The Moving Target of Instrumentation

The mastery of an endodontic instrumentation technique can seem an elusive target, especially when yet another new instrument is introduced with yet another differing and sometimes conflicting rationale for use. When considering what is evidence-based, however, we can keep expertise in perspective by focusing on the constant and stationary parameters of expertise. The notion that seems to suggest that one technique routine for a particular file can fit every canal anatomy needs to be replaced with the realization that understanding the scientific principles of instrumentation is the foundation of expertise. This presentation examines in detail those parameters of expertise that provide efficiency and proficiency for current and future techniques.
