Implant Placement and Ridge Augmentation
 

This is a comprehensive implant placement and tissue management course that features both hands-on and didactic components. The program is designed for the dental surgeon who would like to add and improve procedures to the clinical practice. Hands-on (two participants at each work station with each a complete lower pig jaw) topics will include flap management and implant placement, connective tissue harvest and grafting, extraction site implant placement with socket grafting, GBR procedure with simultaneous implant placement, and vertical ridge augmentation procedure. 

The following materials are demonstrated and utilized: tapered dental implants, resorbable and non-resorbable membranes, bone tacks and –screws, bone graft materials, trephines and micro surgical hand instruments.

The low (<40 surgeons) participant-to-speaker ratio will allow for an interactive environment.

Objectives:
  
Upon the completion of this presentation, participants should be able to

 
a) understand the steps for hard and soft tissue grafting to achieve an esthetic implant site

 
b) determine appropriate grafting and membrane materials for ridge augmentation

 
c) be able to select the appropriate implant type to support the peri-implant tissues

  
d) manage the soft tissues atraumatically and with optimal outcome

Optimal Implant Placement and Bone Grafting/Management:  Novel Bone Grafting Indications with rhBMP-2 for Implant Placement 

Successful implant surgery depends on many factors, one of which is appropriate implant site development through ridge and sinus augmentation.  A new procedure using bone morphogenic proteins was introduced recently.
Historically, BMP’s stimulate differentiation of pleuri-potential stem cells into osteoblasts which produce bone de novo.  Human genes for BMP’s have successfully been cloned utilizing recombinant DNA technology.  Recently, because of encouraging pilot studies in the use of rhBMP-2 for sinus bone grafting, augmentation of the alveolus and repair of alveolar clefts, the promise of an ideal material has been realized.  The pros and cons of utilizing BMP for different types of intra-oral applications will be discussed, along with case reports. 

OBJECTIVES: 

Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
 

a) Describe the physiology of bone regeneration;
b) Identify the properties of recombinant bone morphogenic proteins;
c) Apply a new technology to their clinical practice.
